So... when you upgrade to FF 1.0 you may notice a new default that BUGS. It's the default that tells FireFox to use an existing browser when you launch an external link (i.e. when you click on a link in Outlook, Instant Messenger, etc. the link 'commandeers' your open browser and displays there).
If you want to get rid of this 'feature,' you've got two options. The first is to grab an extension that makes all Tabbed Browsing options available as a new options section from Tools > Options within FireFox. If that option doesn't float your boat, you can easily make the tweak yourself:
- In your address bar, type in about:config
- Within the filter, type in: browser.link.open_external
- Double Click the Config Preference, and set the value to 3
- Restart your browser, and voila! external links now open in a new tab.
I'm sure you could play around with the other options... and probably get it to launch external links in a new window, etc..
Actually you've got 3 options. The 2 hard ways that you mention (and that I advocated) and a third obvious and easy option for non-morons. Details here: http://blog.frogbody.com/frogblog/2004/11/a_new_tab_not_t.html

I found a few interesting things on about:config that really sped up the browser. Here: http://jonlikesbikes.blogspot.com/2004/11/turbo-true.html
