This has got to be one of the DUMBEST lines of thinking I've ever read about:
Swedish organization The Pirate Bay, the "intellectual property reform group" known for its dedication in both hosting and providing trackers for torrents, is looking for its own country. No, that’s not a typo, not their own county, but their own country. Pirates are rejoicing everywhere. The Pirate Bay hopes they rejoice enough to donate (if they do, they will receive citizenship) in order to help purchase Sealand. The man-made isle is a World War II-era British naval platform off the southern coast of England. It is so south that it is out of British waters. [link]
Hey, I hate the RIAA and the MPAA as much (or more) than the next guy - but buying your own nation so'z you can turn thievery into a virtue (at least on paper) is just absurd rationale.
Besides, if these pirates can just set up their own micro-nation to avoid dealing with laws and lawyers, what would stop the RIAA/MPAA from buying their own 'nation', buying up a decommissioned destroyer (or a rubber raft and some commandoes) and blowing the ever-loving HELL out of this off-shore 'nation' of thieves?
I, for one, wouldn't shed a tear at such a 'solution' by the 'media companies' - and I'm sure the media companies would save a LOT of $$ going this rout than fighting for copyright in various courts (commandoes may be expensive, but probably not as much as lawyers).
So yeah... setting yourself up as a 'nation' is a pretty STUPID idea ... unless you're willing to spring for your own navy.
I remember seeing a news article about Sealand going up for sale. Hehe, just makes them easier to find if you ask me. I'm sure the RIAA black ops agents will be going in there like Jack Bauer on crack.
But it does sound like a cliche sci-fi novel. Mega-corporations fighting wars over business practices.
